Three guys go to a ski lodge...

...but unfortunately all the rooms are full, so they have to share a bed for the night. The next morning, the guy on the left shares that he had a vivid dream of getting a hand job. The guy on the left says, “That’s funny, I had the same dream!” The guy in the middle says “That’s weird, I dreamt that I was skiing.”

The underlying philosophy of this low-brow joke is epistemology and the theory of empiricism. The humor lies in the fact that these three men are not fully aware of reality. The connection is drawn by us, the listeners. Empiricism states that our only knowledge of the world is what comes to us through our senses (Cathcart & Klein 54). However, the three men do not fully comprehend their sense data and they’ve applied it to their dreams instead. Unconsciously, their empirical knowledge has been misconstrued, and the punch line comes when we see how these misunderstandings connect.
