I will never hear church bells ringing again without smiling... Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent's house to visit her 95-year-old grandmother and comfort her.
When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, "He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning.
"Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that 2 people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble.
"Oh no, my dear," replied granny. "Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous, simply in on the Ding and out on the Dong."
She paused to wipe away a tear, and continued, "He'd still be alive if the ice cream truck hadn't come, along."

I enjoyed seeing your work in the review and I applaud your courageousness in undertaking a joke studio. However I would like to see more diagrams that explain the process you undertook to move from a narrative to a joint. Word associations, concepts, dialectics, binarisms would be useful at this stage. Keep up the good work!

Joint Sketches (very rough)
Materials:
Press Board = Situated Chaos:
War is a form of situated chaos that fragments and tears people's lives apart. The fragmentation in the press board represents those who are casualties of war.
Knotty Pine = Military/Government Action:
The knotty pine represents the Military/Government's Actions. The knots are to be viewed as bullet holes which serve to remind us that the soldiers also suffer in war.
*The horizontal members represent the military and government; while the vertical members represent the citizens and soldiers who are most affected by government decision and military action. There's only one vertical member (the military) that penetrates a horizontal member (the government): This illustrates the criticism that the government receives over the dead soldiers. The other horizontal member (the military) penetrates the other vertical member (the people) because the military is the "extending" arm of the government that actually executes their decisions.

question for marc
i posted the joint i had for today, it is a detail of the 3 walls hinging from one column, top corner... (hasn't been photoshoped). i will start to construct this for friday, unless u have critical comments...the other 2 joints are almost figured out but i was wondering what should be the main concern for friday? the other 2 or the full scale of this joint...
thanks
thanks

i just realized what is weak in your current sandpaper detail...
you need to over expose it.
the 'sanding block' needs to be bigger than the frame (extend horizontally)...
it could even follow the entire sweep of the door panel...so that it was always sanding...
you could even use sanding disks that are round...
the movement that gives it vitality is eroding it...right?
so over express this...in the hinge.

the book by milan kundera, its title is joke. The main guy's life goes in a total different direction because of a joke he makes in a letter to a lover, and this takes place more in a communist era, , when people don't have privacy in writing letters and, in one of his letters, he says something to his lover, and she takes it seriously, turns him in, and his whole life changes, because of that joke, also
there is a movie by kieslowski, called "blue", the family is in a car, and driving , the husband is driving, and he makes an accident, (himself, and the daughter dies , but this happens again because he is telling a joke while driving, and it creates distraction and laughter.... maybe these are good things to look at... there is alot about the joke and how it penetrates in a second, and changes the direction of things, or becomes a reveal of truth..

Diagram/Joke/Philosophy/Proposals
This is what I was going to show you (Marc) today in class. The diagram shows the male and female, and their relation with the cucumber and tomatoes, respectively. The change in the tomatoes and cucumbers occurs while the picket fence disintegrates, exposing them.
For today I built the construction on the right. This started out as a compost box, but later became cold frames, or flower boxes, and now i think of it more as a seating area. The sides of the enclosure (synonym of garden) show exposure, and how, as you go around it, the wall transitions from solid, to a tight fence, eventually to no fence at all, (except for the two horizontal pieces that would hold the vertical members). The effect of the exposure is the chipboard boxes (cold frames)that rise as the "fence" disintegrates and lowers.
Although it doesn't read as garden, I still don't feel confortable throwing away the idea of the rotating door. I had the idea of changing the bottom half to simulate a picket fence (or some other type of fence), and the top half as maybe shutters, but I'm not sure how much these changes would accomplish.

Bathroom Humor: Joke 3:
A woman's husband dies, and she goes to the preist to set up
his funeral. The preist looks at her and says, "Madam, Your
husband was an upstanding individual, part of the 4H club, a
volunteer firefighter, an active member in the church, but
there is this concern about his association with the KKK."
The woman's face turned white. "W-w-what do you mean she
stuttered?" And the preist replied, "you know, one of those
monsters under the sheets..." A wide smile swept across her
face and began to blush " oh yes! he was definately one of
those!"
Philosophy: There philosophy behind this joke is Relativity of context within the philosophy of language. Where a statement can be perfectly valid in two different contexts, and is the carelessness of human syntax that can cause these miscommunications. Jose's joke about the vegetable garden, and the gunman, have concurrent philosophies to this one.
here is a diagram that shows the ambiguity of the sheet. where on one side the mourning wife sees one thing, and on the other side the preist sees something else- much like deciphering the ambiguity of clouds -the resultant is attempting a convoluted dialogue, the disalignment of understanding is where the humor of the joke emerges.

additional notations on the Bulimic Bachelorette joke suggests an investigation of deeper contexts: using figure ground technique as an analysis for distorted perspectives of afflicted women in society, as either prisoners of male standards or infliction of their own auto-punishments establishes a rift in the perspective of the female, ensnaring her in a web of a world of repressed reality by means entanglememt and nesting.

Diagrams
More to come when I get my hands on a bigger scanner.
A biology professor in a middle school class asks the question "Does anybody in the class know which part of the human body grows 10 times its original size when stimulated?" He calls on Mary, who replies "I'm appalled! I can't believe you would ask me such a disgusting question. I'm going to tell my parents who will tell the principal who will then get you fired!!"
The teacher looks around the room, bewildered.
He then picks another student, Tina, to answer the question.
Tina says "The part of the human body that grows 10 times its size is the iris of the eye!!"
"That's correct" states the professor. "Now, Mary...I've got three things to tell you:
1. You haven't done your homework
2. You've got a dirty mind and
3. You're going to be extremely disappointed one of these days.
