The Hat Makes the Man is often seen as a discourse on the effects of socio-economic factors and sexuality. the hats represent different classes of people (for example, hats worn by the farmer, sailor and the gentry). The stacked arrangement of these hats is phalic as well as indicative of hierarchy of status and of the lack of freedom and social mobility that was being slowly destroyed during that time period.
